Apollo 14
6. THEN - Alan Shepard
Before commanding Apollo 14 in 1971, Shepard rode in the Freedom 7 spacecraft. During his walk on the moon, he famously hit two golf balls and watched them soar in the low gravity.
After leaving NASA in 1974, Shepard wrote a book about his space experiences and helped lead the Mercury Seven Foundation which awarded college scholarships for science. Sadly, Shepard died in 1998 from leukemia.
