Harrison Schmitt was a trained geologist who served as the lunar module pilot for Apollo 17. He was the only astronaut to walk on the moon without military experience, though he helped train all Apollo Moonwalker crews in geology.
After his Apollo 17 mission, Schmitt continued to work with NASA as chief of the scientist-astronauts and then as NASA assistant administrator for energy programs. In 1975, Schmitt left NASA to run for election in the US Senate in New Mexico, he won as a Republican and served a six-year term.
