12. THEN - Eugene Cernan
Eugene Cernan served as commander on Apollo 17. The mission marked the longest lunar landing flight as both Cernan and Harrison Schmitt spent more than three day’s on the moon’s surface. Cernan became the last man to leave his footprints on the surface of the moon.
Eugene Cernan later retired from NASA and the Navy in 1975. He founded his own consulting company, the Cernan Corporation. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Johnson Engineering Corporation, which helped NASA design trainers and equipment for space exploration. Sadly, he died in January 2017.
