5. OSTROGOTHIC GILT SILVER BUCKLE
FIRST HALF OF VI century A.D.
Terminations of solid cast oval loop riveted to the axel. Cast stylized tongue decorated with a band of gilt recessed pyramids. Each corner of rectangular plate set with cabochon garnets. Front plate done in Kerbschnitt (or Keil) technique, where patterns of scrolling were deeply cast and worked over with a chisel. Leather belt still preserved between front and back plates. Approx: L. 4.4"(11.2cm).
6. OSTROGOTHIC GILT SILVER BUCKLE
FIRST HALF OF VI century A.D.
Solid cast silver oval loop with cast stylized bird-head tongue decorated with a band of stamped gilt dots forming a zig-zag flanked by double ridges; eyes in relief, with stamped dotted crosses for pupils, beak emphasized with gilt grooved lines. Each corner and the center of rectangular plate set with garnet cabochons. Front plate entirely gilt, done in Kerbschnitt (or Keil) technique, where patterns of scrolling were deeply cast and worked over with a chisel. Fragment of leather belt still preserved between front and back plates. Large fragment of original fabric preserved by copper oxides on the back plate. Approx: L. 3.8"(9.6 cm).
7. OSTROGOTHIC GILT SILVER BUCKLE
FIRST HALF OF VI century A.D.
Solid cast silver oval loop terminated with gilt head of bird of prey with garnet - glass cabochon eyes. Cast stylized bird-head tongue decorated with a band of four ridges; eyes in relief, with globular pupils. Each corner of rectangular plate set with knobbed rivets, garnet-glass cabochon in the center. Front plate entirely gilt, done in Kerbschnitt (or Keil) technique, where patterns of scrolling were deeply cast and worked over with a chisel. Fragment of leather belt still preserved between front and back plates. Silver back plate reinforced with bronze plates along the perimeter. Approx: L. 3.7"(9.4 cm).
8. OSTROGOTHIC SILVER BUCKLE
FIRST HALF OF VII century A.D.
With an oval loop and a hooked tongue in the form of a stylized bird head; the eyes in relief. Both elements hinged to a rectangular plate. A stylized lion in relief on the plate, with knobbed rivets at each corner; framed by a raised double border. Leather is still preserved between front and back plates.
Approx: L. 2.6"(6.6cm) x 4.9"(12.2cm).
9. OSTROGOTHIC SILVER BUCKLE WITH A CROSS
SECOND HALF OF VI century A.D.
Oval loop; hooked tongue with stylized beak and knobbed eyes, both hinged to a rectangular plate. Decorated with a cross in relief. Raised double border along the perimeter with knobbed rivets at the corners. Complete with original back plate. Small area of professional restoration. Approx: L. 3.6"(9.4cm).
