1. OSTROGOTHIC SILVER EAGLE-HEADED BUCKLE
FIRST HALF OF VII century A.D.
Each end of kidney-shaped loop terminating in stylized animal heads. The eyes and each end with collar-set cabochon glass, as well as two rows of cabochon glass scrolling along the length. Each side of the massive stylized animal head tongue set with cabochon glass, terminated by standing animal. Rectangular plate has projecting eagle head with glass eye, central oval yellow glass medallion, four glass cabochons and one row scrolling on the perimeter. Back silver plate reinforced with flat bars. Leather belt still preserved between front and back plates.  Loop cracked and reinforced with the back-plate, one of the flat bars on the back plate is fragmented.  Approx: L. 7"(17.8cm).



2. OSTROGOTHIC SILVER EAGLE-HEADED BUCKLE
FIRST HALF OF VII century A.D.
Each end of kidney-shaped loop terminating in stylized animal heads. The eyes and each end with collar-set cabochon glass, as well as two rows of cabochon glass scrolling along the length. Each side of the massive stylized animal head tongue set with cabochon glass, terminated by standing animal. Rectangular plate has projecting eagle head with green glass eye. Central oval glass medallion; six blue glass cabochons and two rows scrolling on the perimeter. Back silver plate (with remaining original fabric) reinforced with flat bars. Leather belt still preserved between front and back plates.  Approx: L. 7.5" (19.3cm).

3.  FRANKISH GOLD AND SILVER BUCKLE
FIRST HALF OF V century A.D.
Silver oval loop and tongue are solid cast. Loop is tapering towards the plate, tongue has square garnet inlay set in gold.  Silver plate folded around the loop, secured by rivets. Gold front plate with triangular settings for seven cloisonne garnet inlays and ribbed wire perimeter.
Approx: L. 1.3" (3.2cm).


4.  EASTERN GERMANIC /GEPIDIC?/GILT SILVER BUCKLE
SECOND HALF OF V century A.D.  - DANUBE region
Solid cast silver oval loop terminates with opposed dragon heads with gaping mouths and globular eyes; prominent manes indicated by scrolling band in high relief. Top of heads and necks decorated with zig-zag line at small scale in niello.  Three-faceted tongue decorated with zig-zag line in niello attached to solid rectangular section decorated with cross on scaly pattern background in niello. Rectangular front plate done in Kerbschnitt (or Keil) technique, where patterns of scrolling were deeply cast and worked over with a chisel, framed by a perimeter of zig-zag line at small scale in niello. Silver back plate attached to front by two small rivets. Approx: L. 2"(5.1 cm). The fine detail affords substantial insight into the range, complexity, and quality of the art that was applied in the execution of this technique.
