Russian Space Agency Patch
Russian Space Agency
The Russian Space Agency (RKA) was formed after the breakup of the former Soviet Union and the dissolution of the Soviet space program. Currently, the RKA has centralized control of Russia's civilian space program, including all manned and unmanned nonmilitary space flights. The highest profile program that the RKA is currently flying is the MIR Space Station. The Russian Space Agency ran the shuttle Buran program, and was also the first nation to launch a satellite into orbit (Sputnik I) and competed against the United States in the race to the moon.
Russia's Mir Space Station has been in orbit for over 14 years. The first element of the station was launched on February 20, 1986. It is a third-generation Russian station. During the ten years Mir has been orbiting earth, it has been home to 62 people from 24 crews, from more than a dozen countries including Afghanistan, Austria, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Japan, Syria, United Kingdom, and the United States. One of these, Russian cosmonaut Dr.Valeri Polyakov, has spent a total of 22 months in space; and holds the record for the longest consecutive days in space (14 months - January 8,1994 to March 1995).
Mir Space Station
An essential first step towards the International Space Station, this program had seven long duration missions with US astronauts and 9 Shuttle missions to the MIR.
