1. Alfred The Great Portrait Penny. Silver, 0.87 grams; 18.31 mm. +AELBRED REX, bust right with drapery breaking inner circle. R. Moneyers name in three lines between two unbroken lunettes, .N MON:. EDELEA .NETA., Ethelea at Canterbury or London. Interestingly Moneta is prefixed with an N and there is a trefoil of pellets (privy mark) after MON. Br 1; N 625; S 1057. Unrecorded variant and moneyer on the Early Medieval Corpus at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge University. Slight nibble, otherwise Very Fine/ Extremely Fine. Age toned as recently found. An extremely rare find from Sheffield.
2. Superb 'Two-Line' Alfred The Great Penny. Silver, 1.48 grams; 19.79 mm. EL FR ED REX, around small cross pattee in inner circle. R. Moneyer's name in two lines with a single pellet between, DEA:. . LINC. Interesting arrangement of pellets, trefoil after A, pellet in centre. S 1067/ neater style type. Extremely Fine. A stunning example as struck.
