Number Plates Lights
1. Ok, this is the first picture of my RX8 and it's rear bumper. Just above the 06 is where there are three apertures usually housing the number plate lights.
2. As one can see on the right this shows two of the
apertures, one with one of the light units and a
large void behind it - the attachment is metal.

This design allows for water spray to enter into the space or void.  So those suffering from surface rust may now understand why this maybe happening.

One thing I forgot to mention, a few  weeks ago, when sorting out the condensation in the O/S rear tail light, I decided to check the bulbs for the number plate light. Feeling around along the bumper I did find three  apertures , one  did contain a small light unit, the other two were empty. One could only assume at the time  that these two remaining apertures did contain something at one time.  Possibly holding  two light units and a blanking plate the manual was not too helpful  in identifying the missing items.
I decided to see what was on eBay, and found single and double units, however nothing suggesting that anything was in the third or middle aperture. I decided to contact the supplier and they told me  when breaking the vehicles they  only found one or two light units, the other was blank and open to the elements.
This is another area where  it can be vulnerable to rain spray and one wonders if this is a cause  of boot surface rust? The bumpers are usually plastic, the  aperture could also supply ventilation so the answer  to this question is unanswered at the moment. On inspecting the light units, one can see they slide in to the edges (grooves)and clip, it to slide into place . Obviously he size of the aperture allows for this, leaving a space at the back of the light unit and also exposing the inner part of the bumper to rain spary.
I will most light fit the two light units initially and if possible the third one if it fits and wire it up to the loom. There will be a bright rear number plate, especially if the bulbs are upgraded to LED.......Weird.
