Elizabeth I  1558-1603 AD

Elizabeth I (1558-1603) gold Half Pound ND, Half Pound, first issue, m.m. lis, 1558-60 Schneider-808 bust style, 6th issue of 1583-1600, Tun mm (struck 1593-94), coined in Crown Gold (22ct, or .917)The Latin legend on reverse translates to mean "The Shield of Faith Shall Protect Her", first used on the gold of Edward VI, whom the shield little protected, and then on Elizabeth's gold coins, where its charm worked well for many years as her reign was among the longest lasting of all. The 6th Issue general coinage coincides with the 3rd Gold Coinage of June 10, 1593 to March 24, 1603, meaning that this marvelous coin, bearing the tun mintmark (used from June 10, 1593 through May 8, 1594), was made right at the start of this, the final gold coinage issued under Elizabeth's name. In its day this coin was called 20 Shillings, its value in gold. A British hammered-gold.

Elizabeth I AV Half Pound. Second issue, 1560-1561. London mint; mm: cross-crosslet. ELIZABETH D' G' ANG' FRA' ET HI' REGINA, crowned bust left / SCVTVM FIDEI PROTEGET EAM, crowned coat-of-arms; E R at sides.

The portrait is the earliest of Elizabeth’s side profile used on her gold coinage and was never used again on coins of later issues. As this was a first attempt at Elizabeth’s likeness on a coin it is most probably taken from a sitting with the queen and Derek Anthony who was the chief engraver at the time. Later issues see adjustments to the portrait but no signs of the queen ageing; they are instead variations of this iconic image of the Virgin queen. The portrait seen here has a prominent chin, a small heavily arched crown and elongated face that were all adjusted in later issues to flatter a monarch who took a keen interest in her portraiture.
