George IV 1820-1830 AD
George was born on 17 August 1762, the eldest son of George III and Queen Charlotte.
George was an enigma: bright, witty and able on the one hand, indolent, spoiled, and lazy on the other. The Duke of Wellington described him as such: "He was the most extraordinary compound of talent, wit, buffoonery, obstinacy, and good feelings, in short, a medley of the most opposite qualities, with a great preponderance of good - that I ever saw in any character in my life."
In the last years of his life George had little involvement in government and spent his time in seclusion at Windsor Castle. He died on 26 June 1830. His only child, Princess Charlotte had died in childbirth in 1817, so the crown passed to George's brother who became William IV.
There were 2 designs in the year 1823, the laureate head and barehead.
As well as this, there is an extremely rare version with Roman numeral I
instead of 1 in the year.
