DO check the brake fluid levels on completion of task

Note: On E39's, the adjusters are usually situated at around 5 and 11-12 O' Clock positions within the drum (UK)
Some assemblies can be found in reverse (USA)ie. adjusters on the top 12-1 and 6 o'clock positions, based on model, year and country.
Brake adjuster
fig: Source - To return brake piston, use a 'G' or 'C' Clamp, loosen the bleed nipple to allow air/fluid to escape, tighten up nipple before releasing clamp, this will prevent air getting back into the system.
This task can be done with piston attached to the vehicle.
fig: Source - Piston, also check rubber, if damaged replace or rebuild caliper - note: dirt or grit can cause brake to fail or lock
