Purchasing A Metal Detector
Some metal detector's that are available, are reasonably priced at £39+ (Maplin 12/2010) and others I have seen £2000+, silly money for someone like me, obviously the latter was a big no, no. Bearing that in mind, I knew I wanted a metal detector capable of doing everything... and wanted it cheap, if it could find an all-rounder then that was a bonus!
Looking at some websites, and talking to like-minded folk, I decided to look at the 'Garrett' and the various models seemed to tick all the right boxes, however when retail pricing them, (models can be purchased in the UK) even they were a little outside my pocket, considering the financial climate. What's more, I was given a choice of models such as the 150, 250 and there was talk of a newer model, at the time, the 350. I left the idea on the shelf and one day, I heard someone had found a hoard in Staffordshire, and yes, I did say, "Good Luck to him!" I then walked over to the computer to see what was on the internet, found out the value; I may have muttered something, and cried, but can't recall.
When looking at the prices early 2010 the market was fluctuating and the Garrett 150 was priced around the £100+ mark give or take and the 250 around the £250+ mark. Do shop around, like everything, you can be told after the event, you could have got it cheaper. (strange how these people are never around at the time or appear after the event.....)
I found my Garrett 250 by searching on ebay, I then placed a bid on three auctions and won on the third attempt. (It helps if it is at 3am in the morning) for £140 used once (I belived them, at 3 in the morning, who wouldn't!). Delivery, it came two days later, (Good old posty) in the original box with video, headphones, manual and a long canvas bag.
Today, due to the newer models, I belive the prices have been reduced, so the beginner or even the most seasoned enthusiast, should beable to get a reasonable bargain. The Garrett 150 is good, but the 250 seems a little more refined - about mid-range. The colour yellow may put some of you off, but hey, at least you know where you've placed it amongst the long grass, for those like me, forgetting where I placed my car keys can be trying... (Yes it's bigger, however, I have just found myself recently requiring the use of glasses...so yellow is good).
If you do decide to re-sell you metal detector, club members may be interested in purchasing it. However, do note the Garrett 250 are very popular and they do hold their secondhand value, (this cannot be guaranteed, so don't quote me). I paid £140 and would be looking to re-sell for £179+ - (near new condition, boxed - check the market as prices fluctuate due to new models being introduced and popular demand - a good rule of thumb is to check the retail prices and prices online and guage a price just above midway).
