1. Don't litter the countryside, take your rubbish home with you.
2. Take care not to frighten any of the animals. If any animals start running around, stop detecting and stand still until they stop, then start detecting again. They will eventually get used to you and take no notice.
3. Always close gates
4. Do not climb over gates, fences, hedges, or walls. They are all expensive to repair, any damage to them will not be looked upon kindly by the farmer.
5. Always use the gate when moving from field to field, and always close it behind you.
6. Detect in such a way that you end up at the gateway you want to leave through, whether it is into the next field or back the way you came in.
7. If a gate is padlocked, or cannot be opened for whatever reason, and the only way forward is to climb over it, then make sure you climb over at the heel of the gate. The heel is the end nearest the hinges and is the strongest area of a gate. Climbing over the opening end can easily bend a galvanised metal pipe gate, and can do even more damage to a wooden gate, putting strain on the joints and severely distorting, or even breaking the gate. The wider the gate, the greater the damage will be.
8. Treat a farmers property as if it were your own. Remember, it is his home as well as his place of work.
9. Parking spots and access points can change during the year - always check with the farmer when arriving at the farm, he will point you in the right direction.
10. Finally,always make sure, before you leave the farm, you see the farmer to show and discuss your finds with him.
