Lapilli
Name: Lapilli
Location: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Date: 2010
Caption: Accretionary Lapilli from the 1790 Explosive Eruption - These pea-sized fragments form when fine ash coalesces around small nuclei of rock fragments or raindrops within steam-laden explosion clouds. Because they form in turbulent clouds and fall to the earth's surface, accretionary lapilli have been called volcanic hailstones.
