IRON ARROWHEAD WITH A WHISTLE  12-14 century
Lenticular in cross-section blade, the tang under the blade has bulbous element with opposed apertures, which served as a whistle. L. 3.4" ( 8.6 cm).
This form derived from iron arrowheads with bone whistles, placed at upper tang. Some scholars believe that during the flight, such arrows produced a whistling noise that frightened the foe's horses. According to the Secret History of the Mongols, a whistling arrow of this kind was given to Temüchin by Jamuka, who made it from the horns of a two-year old bull, glued together and pierced.
