Half Penny  (Silver)

Eadgar-959-972 AD
Eadgar Cut Halfpenny. Silver, 0.79 grams; 21.71 mm. +EADGA[R RX], with crowned bust right, (A.D. 959 - 972). R. Small cross within inner circle, moneyer without mint name around, BRV[NINC MON]ETAN, Moneyer Brunic. N 750; S 1138 variant. Recorded with the Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge University as: 2005.0051. Undamaged 'as traded' condition and Extremely Fine.

Only four other coins of this moneyer recorded with the Medieval Coin Corpus (EMC) at the Fitzwilliam Museum, one in the Sylloge of Coins (SCBI) in the British Museum, and no examples of Halfpence. All of these coins have the same reverse legend except this one that ends in 'ETA N', where the 'N' on our example could represent N for Norwich Mint. Probably only one other example known - Montagu collection (lot 723), later in the Symonds collection (lot 49). Norwich seems the most likely mint. A penny in this grade would be worth at least £2,475.00 not taking into consideration the addition rarity of the reverse.
Estimated Value 2014 ££2,475.00
