Half Guinea
The half guinea gold coin of the Kingdom of England and later of Great Britain was first produced in 1669, some years after the Guinea entered circulation. It was officially eliminated in the Great Recoinage of 1816, although, like the guinea, it was used in quoting prices until decimalisation.
There is only one obverse and two different reverses issued for the half guinea of William III reign.
Some half guineas have an Elephant and castle below bust which meant the gold used came from the Africa Company.
No half guineas were minted at local provincial mints. 1695-1701 Gold, 4.2 grams, 20mm Diameter.
William III (1694-1702), gold Half-Guinea, 1701, first laureate head right, legend surrounding, GVLIELMVS. III.DEI. GRA., toothed border around rim both sides, rev. crowned cruciform shields, sceptres in angles, lion of Nassau at centre, later harp in Irish arms, date either side of top crown, MAG. BR. FRA. ET. HIB. REX. weight 4.14g.
The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "William the Third by the Grace of God," and abbreviated on the reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland."
