In 1887, the Royal Mint issued this Double Sovereign for general circulation to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. Double Sovereigns were only struck on special occasions and this was the first £2 gold coin to be issued during her reign.

Made from half an ounce of solid 22ct gold, the obverse features the “Jubilee Head” portrait of Victoria that commemorated the landmark event, and the reverse shows Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous design of St. George slaying the Dragon.
