George VI 1936-1952 AD
George VI (Albert Frederick Arthur George; 14 December 1895 - 6 February 1952) was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until his death. He was the last Emperor of India (until 22 June 1948), the last King of Ireland (until 18 April 1949), and the first Head of the Commonwealth .
The first design (1937-48) provides the initials GRI (Georgius REX Imperator) surmounted by a crown. The metal used to stamp the sixpence was originally an alloy containing 50% silver. However, in 1947 the metal was changed to cupronickel, an alloy of copper and nickel cotaining no silver.
In 1949 the initials were changed to GVIR and the inscription IND IMP was removed as the King was no longer Emperor of India. Due to the Korean War, which created a demand for nickel, no cupronickel coins were struck for circulation in the UK dated 1952, however, a relatively small number (1,013,477) of sixpences were struck for use in the West Indies and coins of that date are only found occasionally, within the UK.
