Sixpence
George II 1727-1760 AD
Sixpence, 1757, laureate head of George left, GEORGIVS I I DEI GRATIA , rev., 17578 M B F ET H REX F D B ET L D S R I A T ET E, four crowned shields with the arms of Great Britain, France, Hanover and Ireland in the form of a cross, scepters in between, a Garter Star in the centre, edge diagonally milled.
During the reign of George II a number of issues were designed by John Sigismund Tanner, one time Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint, and it has been suggested that this is the origin of the nickname "tanner", which was a popular name for the coin until decimalisation. An alternative explanation for the nickname is that it comes from Angloromani word tawno meaning small thing.
