Elizabeth I 1558-1603 AD
Huge quantities of coins were minted under the reign of Elizabeth I. An Elizabethan sixpence is easy to identify even if the date is not clear since they all (except for one very rare exception) had a rose behind the queen's head. Smaller sized English sixpence from the reign of Elizabeth the first. Earlier sixpences in this second coinage series of Elizabeth were larger.
The Elizabethan hammered sixpences - coins over 400 years old! Due to their age, the softness of the silver and poor striking, (it was all done by hand) the portraits on these coins are quite often hard to make out, but the reverse side is nearly always well defined and the dates very clear to see.
