The engravers Thomas Simon and the Roettier family who competed to produce the new coins and were mentioned in Samuel Pepy's Diary on March 9th, 1663.

The new design introduced two new features; the alternating reversal of the monarch's profile which continues to today and the disappearance of a crowned monarch, providing a less crowded design.
