Charles I  1625-1649 AD  

They are all hand struck on handmade planchets. On one side is a portrait of King Charles I and on the other is his coat of Arms.

Obverse: Crowned and bearded bust of Charles I left, XII behind head, vertical anchor mm CAROLVS D G MA BR FR ET HI REX Reverse: Shield with cross on it, quartering arms, horizontal anchor mm CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO

Shilling / siege money from Newark besieged 1646. Lozenge shaped coin.

Obverse ("heads" side): Large crown between C R, below XII. Reverse: OBS NEWARK 1646.

Money from the English Civil War (1642-1649). This ‘siege money’ or ‘money of necessity’ was used to pay garrisons in some of the Royalist towns besieged during the Civil War. the unusual circumstances surrounding the striking of this money, with limited resources to hand in the besieged towns, although in the case of these Newark examples, the engraving is competent and the weights correspond with contemporary coin standards.
