Hammered Long Cross Penny of Henry III     1216-1272 AD

Featured is a Long Cross Penny of Henry III, who initiated a great recoinage during his reign to restrike England's old worn, clipped issues and introduce a new design which was intended to make clipping more obvious, and thus discourage the practice. As a result of the fact that these pennies were produced in vast quantities from melting down earlier issues, they tend to be some of the most common and affordable types of English hammered coins.

Son of the infamous King John he succeeded to the throne when he was just nine years old.
By all accounts not particularly good for the English he depended on foreign favourites to guide him. Henry was more religious than political and in his long reign he achieved among other things the rebuilding of Westminster Abbey and welcomed the Franciscan Friars to his kingdom.

The silver pennies known as long cross were struck from 1247-72 the larger cross was introduced to help safeguard the coins against clipping.

Henry III in 1257 minted a gold penny which had the value of twenty silver pence. The weight and value of the silver penny steadily declined from 1300 onwards.
