Edward III 1327-1377 AD
England has had no less than Eight King Edward’s and probably the greatest and certainly the longest reigning was Edward III. He ruled from 1327 to 1377, 50 years, an exceptionally long time for a medieval monarch.
Restoring royal authority after the disastrous reign of his father, Edward II , Edward III went on to transform the Kingdom of England into one of the most efficient military powers in Europe. His reign saw vital developments in legislature and government-in particular the evolution of the English parliament-as well as the ravages of the Black Death.
Despite his long reign, Edward III’s coinage is not particularly plentiful. Pennies are rather difficult, as few were struck for the early part of his reign.
On the obverse the youthful crowned facing portrait of Edward with the fashionable long flowing hair of the period. On the reverse a long cross dividing the legends.
