Half Crown
George III   1760-1820  AD

George III (George William Frederick; 4 June 1738 - 29 January 1820) was King  of Great Britain  and King  of Ireland  from 25 October 1760 until the union of these two countries on 1 January 1801, after which he was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland  until his death. He was concurrently Duke and prince-elector  of Brunswick-Lüneburg ("Hanover")  in the Holy Roman Empire  until his promotion to King of Hanover  on 12 October 1814. He was the third British monarch of the House of Hanover , but unlike his two predecessors he was born in Britain and spoke English as his first language. Despite his long life, he never visited Hanover.

Well worn examples of the issues of George III are very common. They have a diameter of 32 mm and a weight of 14.1 g, dimensions which remained the same for the half crown until decimalisation in 1971. The reverse of all subsequent halfcrowns consists of a shield with the royal coat of arms.

The first portrait, used in 1816 and 1817, was not very flattering of King George, so a new design  came out during 1817. The halfcrown was then issued almost every year until 1850, when minting ceased because of the introduction of the florin in 1849. Unusually, in 1820 coins were issued for both George III and George IV.
