This pound coin is a new 12 sided design with the edges slightly rounded. This has practical reasons in as much as it will roll into vending machines and parking meters. The rounded edges also means it not a too radical change side by side with the old coin.

The royal mint say it is the most secure coin in the world being the hardest to counterfeit. 12 sided makes this coin harder to copy. Bimetallic so made of two metals, gold coloured outer ring and silver in the middle.

The mall section below Her Majesty the Queen is like a hologram that changes from a £ symbol to a 1. And micro lettering around the edge is very difficult to replicate. One side says one pound and the other has the year of production so 2016 for this one.

Also alternating milled and smooth edges are a feature. And apparently it has some hidden features too. Which will mean sawing it in half but I can’t do that on camera because to draw on or deface notes or destroy coins here is an offence. If you get caught you may get a fine, and if you put it on the internet you’re going to get caught.

The Royal Mint say about the coins features:
Bold new design - it also features a new design that shows the English rose, the Welsh leek, the Scottish thistle and the Northern Irish shamrock emerging from one stem within a royal coronet. A design created by David Pearce who won a public design competition aged only 15.

The fifth coinage portrait - the fifth coin portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, designed by Royal Mint coin designer Jody Clark, is featured on the coin.
