1. Aethelstan 'ABONEL' Hammered Anglo-Saxon two-line Two line silver penny Silver, 1.52 grams, 22.53 mm. 924-939 AD, BMC type i; southern and Mercian mints. Obverse: small cross with +AEDEL.STAN RE legend. Reverse: name ABO / NIEL legend in two lines (pellet over L) for the moneyer Abonel with three crosses at centre and trefoil above and below. S. 1089; N. 668(1)a. Good very fine. This example, is the only one coin of this moneyer with a different spelling, recorded at London on the Early Medieval Coin Corpus at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge University.
