Age can be determined, in some cases, by the degree to which the bones show arthritis. Arthritis can be broken down to the prefix arthr- = joint, and -itis = inflammation. Arthritis is therefore the swelling of the joints. One of the effects of arthritis is to change the shape of the bones at the point where the joints are swollen, as you can see in the images below:
