'Challening time'

Alison Brannick, principal at Landau Forte College Derby, said the school has "organised additional pastoral support, including trained mental health first aiders and careers advisers to help make sure all students understand their options for the future".

She added: "While we are expecting really positive results next week, we know how important it is to make sure all our young people are supported during what can be a challenging time, and particularly so given the last few years."

Dr Tony Breslin, former GCSE chief examiner, said: "Young people don’t compare themselves with the pass rate of three or four years ago, they compare themselves with the pass rate of their most immediate peers. So in that sense it may be that some young people will be disappointed.

"My sense is that examiners will still be inclined to give candidates the benefit of the doubt in very marginal cases."
