To Release the handbrake cable from hub you may need to use a hammer and punch or screwdriver,  over time the metal collar on the brake cable will 'self seal' or fuse into the softer metal through weathering and general grime and rust etc'. (This can take time and is hard work at times)...
Note: This procedure is not required
This model 2000 E39 does NOT have a retaining Clamp.You may find you will need to use some force to release the cable.

Reassemble :
1.Refit shoes using the spring pins
2. Connect the hinged caliper to the cable
3.Re-attach adjuster on the bottom (note: direction)
4. Attach the upper and lower springs

4. Attach  upper /lower springs
Checking the brake caliper is the right way around.
Check both shoes react when handbrake is placed on. If not, turn the hinged caliper around and then try again. This is important for full operational handbraking.
