I had previously purchased a large socket, (below) indicating it was to fit a BMW oil filter housing, however the tool was the wrong size for the Z3 model at least, the lesson here is to take dimensions before purchasing and not to believe everything one reads, especially if purchasing from China. This example is 74mm with 14 flutes and priced around £10-£13, do shop around as prices do vary. The rule of thumb, is to estimate or get dimensions of the 'nut shape' on top of the tool and compare it with the dimensions of the nut on top of oil filter housing.

If all this fails, a good set of mole grips will do the job as long as there is a slight curve within the jaws, this will grip the shape of the nut on top of the housing. A straight jaw will not expand around the areas and it will round off the edges of the nut shape and could damage the filter housing, so do use the curved ones.
