Dust Plates are mounted onto the axel hub where they are also used to mount brake shoes, brake cylinder, springs, handbrake calliper, adjuster, shoe retainer pins and springs.
Sometimes, dust plates can become distorted, suffer corrosion or road debris gets caught between the rotor and dust plate; making vital parts fail over time, this can cause scraping on the brake rotor; accompanied by excessive noise during wheel motion and this unit should be replaced to correct this problem.

2*Rear Disc Brake Back Plate Pair for BMW 3 Series E30 E36 Compact Z3 NEW
I had a local garage fit these for me, I was given a quote, accepted and was charged more when the job was done. I was busy at the time and it cost me an arm and a leg as they needed to split or cut the discs almost in half to fit them. The car had to go back after the plates started to rattle, Yep! They had forgotten to tighten the bolts. The moral of this story - Try and fit them yourself if possible!
Note: You can get the updated versions of these discs now, each disc comes in two halves, much easier to fit if working solo. You will need to search the upgrades and are little difficult to find, based on the age of the car.
