Fuse Option
I also became aware of Fuse 4, (in the glove box). With fuse 4 OUT, the battery has stayed up for at least three days so far. This is something to do with interior lights, (includes boot, and plate lights), window washer motor and heater. On checking the windowscreen washer it does work ok, with fuse 4 inserted.Problems can arise with moisture causing the motor to short. I also believe the reverse factory sensors may be on this circuit too, based on selecting my reverse gears the bleeps sounds.  When Fuse 4 is out, the bleep does not sound. There is an indication on the fuse card that Fuse 21 on the listing is responsible for reverse sensors and could be an indication of the wires fusing together, or I have the wrong card for this vehicle, only as a possibility to be aware of, without sounding an alarmist, however it is unlikely to be this unless the guts have previously been ripped out of your wiring loom. This one you will need to check on your e39 and could be a culprit for battery drain.

Update: This fuse assembly does detach using these catches and sliding back a carridge allowing a little wriggle room and a little access to the wires connected behind the fuses
