Source fig. This connection is plugged into the FSU, once unplugged, three torq screws holds the FSU in position, The FSU may need some persuassion to pull free if it has not been removed for some  time or is the original fitting, also note the retaining clips on eitherside of the connection - be careful not the break them as they can be brittle.

Was this the problem? In my case, NO!  The blower worked fine before a replacement was fitted, however it was more down to peace of mind and illiminating the possible causes. This is an expensive way of trying to solve a problem, however with the job done it can be crossed off the list. I also have a spare hedgehog if one is needed in the future as they are not reliable and they are a common fault with the E39.

Months on and working fine.
