The Kopassus is the special forces unit of the Indonesian Army and their name is a blend of the words Komando Pasukan Khusus, which means “Special Forces Command.”  Though they were created in 1952, they didn’t become well known until after the Indonesian invasion of East Timor in the 1970s and gained notoriety once again when they helped release the hostages of the 1981 Garuda Indonesia Flight 206. Their members are very well respected, especially by the media and they are brought in to help with government military campaigns.
