The snowflakes fall silently,
Brushed by the wind.
The old lake has frozen,
And the sound of children may be heard.
Don't go near the lake my son,
Don't go near the lake;
These are the only words I hear
On this quiet , lonely day.

There are animals playing and leaping
Near the quiet, icy waters edge...
They must be told of the dangers;
Of the thin ice upon the lake.

Don't go near the lake my son,
Don't go near the lake;
These are the only words I hear
On this quiet , lonely day.

My heart beats so fast!
And yet! All my fears pass,
Would shouting at the timid ones?
In hope they would understand -
Would they listen to the warnings?
Don't go near the lake my son,
Don't go near the lake;
These are the only words I hear
On this quiet , lonely day.

The animals scamper away in fear
And look back in disbelief,
The snowflakes fall so silently
Brushed by the cool, cool wind.
The old lake has frozen over now
On this quiet lonely day.
Don't go near the lake my son,
Don't go near the lake;
These are the only words I hear
On this quiet , lonely day
