With fear and adrenalin I go forward with the wave, Sounds all around me Cracking and thudding... As I stumble for my footing, across the sand The weight of my backpack, and rifle in hand. A wish to discard it. With flashes of light And explosions of sound. My legs feel like concrete, Weight to be lifted, my head spinning around. A surreal environment I look All around. Images, slow motion, Muffled sounds. People, dead bodies Scattered on the sands. I look at the confusion And my turmoil and shaking hands. Instinct kicks in to survive Keep moving, keep moving Over and over , voice in my mind... Like a tape recording, find cover or die! Keep moving, keep moving, A soldier in front drops and dies... I fall over him, into a crater piled high, A fellow soldier Stares, in front... Tears not breaking, but still alive. Emotions frozen, frozen in time And nothing needs to be said, We stay still, until, until... We wait for our orders, To bring sanity, once again And not knowing when, or why. Bullets spray the sands, in front of me Just missing, I pray! A period of clarity, rifle aimed An object in sight, squeezed trigger, away... I need to stop the bullets coming my way. Hesitation, kill or be killed, The voices, ring out, advance! From a Sergeant Major I can only glance! I go forward with the wave, No questions asked! I go forward with the wave... Sounds all around me, Cracking and thudding... As I stumble for my footing, across the sand The weight of my backpack, and rifle in hand. A wish to discard it. With flashes of light And explosions of sound. My legs feel like concrete, Weight to be lifted, my head spinning around. A surreal environment I look All around Images, slow motion, Muffled sounds People, dead bodies Scattered on the sands. I look at the confusion And my turmoil and shaking hands. |
