3. Code of Practice for Responsible Metal Detecting (England & Wales)
Outlines best practices for detectorists, including:
- Always obtain written permission from landowners.
- Avoid detecting on protected sites (Scheduled Monuments, SSSIs, military crash sites).
- Detect only on disturbed ground (e.g. ploughed fields), and within the depth of ploughing.
- Record finds with the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS).
- Carry public liability insurance via NCMD or FID.
4. Planning Policy and Development Control
- Archaeological remains are considered a material consideration in planning applications.
- Local authorities may require archaeological surveys before development.
- Finds made during construction must be reported and may trigger further investigation.
Additional Notes:
No formal licence is required to own or use a metal detector in the UK.
However, trespassing and detecting without permission are civil offences and detecting on protected sites without consent is a criminal offence.
