Metal Detecting as Archaeological Practice

Metal detecting, when used responsibly, are a valuable tool in archaeological survey and site analysis. It allows for the identification of buried metallic artefacts, helps define site boundaries and supports excavation and planning.

Purpose

Identify concentrations of metal artefacts.

Assist in mapping site extent and activity zones.

Support excavation by locating small or deeply buried items.

Procedure - Preparation

• Obtain landowner permission and check legal restrictions (e.g. Scheduled Monuments).
• Calibrate detector for soil type and expected artefact range.
• Establish a grid or transect system for systematic coverage.

Survey

• Sweep slowly and consistently, maintaining coil height.
• Mark signals with flags or GPS.
• Record signal strength, tone and location.
