In 1984, NASA launched a jetpack technology in the form of the Manned Manoeuvring Unit. This new system allowed astronaut Bruce McCandless to venture further away from his ship than any astronaut had before him. His 320-foot journey away from the Orbiter was a new record for human travel and a taste of the future of space exploration.
