As jacks go, I prefer a 'V' capping plate or a ' I___I' plate  with a deepish cap underneath to attach onto the top 'screw/plunger for more safety, (prevents slipping) however, this does need to beable  to withstand the weight of the vehicle  and most likely needs to be forged to the correct hardness to beable to withstand the weight. Just a thought for those budding Blacksmiths out there! I am sure there is something out there that meets that description I vaguely remember my old bottle jack use to have possibly described as 'wings'  and it was welded to the top of the turn screw cap (update - LandRover bottle jacks have the wings as described).
