Battery (Continued)

The e39 does have an onboard computer that allows you to perform basic tests through the instrument panel or clock cluster. One of the tests allows you to check the battery voltage.
1. Ignition on 1st click - By pressing the trip counter button for 4-5 seconds activates the test sequence.

2. To perform each test one needs to unlock the program for each task by counting up to 19 within the display.

3. 19 will display a flashing On/Off  as it flashes off, press button for on, this is a quick action and can be missed if this is the case, you will have to start the counting process again and recount to to 19.

4. If the process is accepted 'Test' should be displayed, and the button should be pressed repeatedly to count up to 9 and pause for a second..
This display will show voltage. At this point it will read standing charge. By starting the engine, (you may have to repeat the above process again if there is a break in the current to the cluster) the engine will show the running charge as voltage.

There are other tests available  eg. Test 2 will display the clock cluster and light test, a test everyone likes to see, for some weird reason.....
