There are different OBD II Meters available at varied cost from £9 to £100's plus and can be useful to any BM owner and others with compatable OBDII connections with menus including other vehicle makes covered by the OBDII Meters. They are designed to perform a number of functions via menus to include identifying sensor faults to most if not all sensors in the car, they can reset most faults including Service and Oil lights, Airbags, ABS etc. And varied other dash lights, so a useful tool to have available. I initially bought the following two:

Note: I bought the red one thinking that it would sort out the Airbag light, it didn't! Even though the advert suggested it did, I put it down to the factory programming, or I hadn't quite understood the instructions. Ok, it is a  back-up unit for other problems. The one I recommend is the C110  it turned off the Airbag error light and is more comprehensive.

With the E39, some have a duel OBD II sockets to plug in the meters, one under the Bonnet (Hood), and one under the drivers side dash. The Bonnet (Hood) socket will require the adapter connector 'b' as featured above, for tool connection).
